Marriage Intensives
More time. This is the desire of every marriage therapist. We dream of a place that a couple can come and spend uninterrupted time in counseling in order to get to a place of healthy stability. A place where they are taken care of for an extended weekend (or longer), until they can work through the important issues that face them in their marriage and family. In the traditional one-hour-per-week counseling session the uttering by the therapist of ‘our time is up’ too often coincides with the point when we are starting to make good progress. Homework assignments can enhance the process, but nothing can bring back the moment we were in when ‘our time was up.’ How much work could be done if there was enough time to stay in the moment, complete the conversation and let healing begin – one way or the other?
Our intensive marriage retreats are designed to help the couple in conflict sort through their issues over a three-night visit to our retreat house. Four hours of therapy per day, two individual sessions and two couples sessions, are conducted in a home setting in our rural Northeast Georgia farm house. Our weekend marriage retreats at Apple Valley are designed to provide the couple a very therapeutic environment where they can learn the skills necessary to become a healthy couple, functioning together as a unit. It is designed for couples who are struggling in conflict and strife, as well as those who are doing well, but want to love each other more deeply.
Our retreat participants will receive a minimum of 12 hours of counseling. Meals are provided at the facility, and there are times when the couple is encouraged to have ‘date’ time. This rural setting has nearby shopping, swimming, fishing, golf, spa, gym as well as just relaxation of being at our retreat house. The weekend is focused on helping the couple hear the concerns of the other in a setting that is safe, and learning ways to build positive relationships again. The retreat is designed so that the couple can focus on each other!

The marriage retreat is intended to complement a relationship with a counselor near your home. It is not stand-alone therapy. While we can deal with a lot during the intensive, it is very important that you have on-going therapy. This weekend is appropriate as a kick-start or as a tool your therapist might have recommended. We will be happy to talk with your therapist if you desire, but permission must be obtained from everyone involved before information will be shared.
